Star Trek

Star Trek is set in the year 2233 as the starship USS Kelvin encounters a bizarre “lightning storm” near the United Federation of Planets’ border with the Klingon Empire. As the crew observes the mysterious phenomenon, a massive Romulan ship from the future emerges. They open fire on the Kelvin and agree to cease-fire upon one condition: the captain must board the Romulan ship. When the captain arrives aboard the ship, they still continue to fire missiles upon the Kelvin, eventually taking down the ship. There is a time jump to James Tiberius, son of George Kirk, and Spock, a member of the Vulcan Federation, on their paths to Starfleet Academy. Spock’s decision to join Starfleet is an act of rebellion, while Kirk’s is more of a response to a dare from Starfleet Captain Christopher Pike. Throughout the movie, the two battle for who is more competent and able as a member of Starfleet. Eventually, they have team up to save the Enterprise from being destroyed in the same manner that the Kelvin did. This teamwork helped to establish a long-lasting relationship between the two that serve to their benefit for years to come.

Personally, I felt like the entire movie was rushed, in that, the timeline could have been more synced and the transition not as abrupt. For example, Kirk went from being on academic suspension due to "cheating" Spock's game, to being the Captain of the Enterprise in one movie. That is pretty unbelievable in my opinion. Otherwise, I enjoyed the movie overall and the actions scenes. I appreciated the progression of Officer Nyota Uhura as we watched the different series and finally the movie. It means a lot to me to see a person of color making change and standing in a position of equity.
